The Original Greek Air Jordans?
Historical References
Argo and Achilles
Disney also throws references of other Greek myths into their story. When Hercules is trying to convince Philoctetes ,or Phil for short, to train him to be a hero Phil talks about how he trained a bunch of other hereos and they failed. He even talked about Achilles and his "blasted heal" which referes back to the myth where his only weak spot was his heal. We also see the mast of Argo in Phil's house and Hercules hits his head on it. Phil proceeds to tell him to be careful which is ironic because the mast of Argo actually fell on someone killing them. The historical references also come from the real Greek myth of Heracles. The scene where Meg is being carried by the river god actually happened in the greek myth but instead the river god kidnapped and tried to rape Heracles's wife while he could not cross the river. They also portray Hercules wearing a lion fur and holding a club which is the iconic image of Heracles.
Disney Guest Stars
Scar playing the Nemean Lion?
Disney often times has its other characters make a star appearance in other movies. In Hercules we see Scar from The Lion King as the skin of the Nemean lion that Hercules uses to pose for his pictures as well as something for Phil to wipe his face paint off on. We also see the bunny, squirrel, and birds from Snow White when Pain and Panic, Hades henchmen, are disguised as them while spying on Meg and Hercules.
Disney movies are known to have references to their other movies inside their films.
Disney did a great job of throwing a little pop culture into this ancient myth. You can see this with the the "Air-Herc" sandals that refer back to Air Jordans, the iconic Maryln Monroe image of her dress flying up as a constellation, as well as the sunset training that refers to the popular movie Karate Kid. Disney also makes a reference to Thebes being the "Big Olive" and talking about how full of crime it is which is refering to New York or "The Big Apple". These small references make the movie more relatable and interesting to the audience members.
